The Village of Big Rock constructed a long-term plan that was implemented from 2004-2012 to fix their deteriorating wastewater infrastructure. This began with surveying the residents in Big Rock and to grasp the situation of the many complaints of untreated wastewater. Applied Technologies Inc. began work in 2008 through a study that evaluated the wastewater collection, treatment and disposal systems. A complete wastewater facilities plan was completed in January 2010 and the upgrades began in 2011 with grants and loans given by the IEPA. Final construction and the beginning of operation began at the end of 2011 into 2012.
